How to transfer motorcycle ownership in the Czech Republic

Signing the contract and handing over the keys does not complete the ownership transfer. Agree on the transfer process, insurance and handover before the motorcycle changes hands to avoid unnecessary problems.

Agree who will handle each step

Include party identification, VIN, license plate, price, mileage and known defects in the written contract. When handing over, record the date and time, number of keys, documents and accessories. Using the Transport Portal

1. Seller logs in to Transport Portal, selects the vehicle and initiates the owner change.
2. Gives the generated code or link to the buyer; the buyer logs in with their electronic identity and follows up on the request.
3. Completes the data and selects the office. He then follows the portal's specific instructions for documents, fee and completion.
4. Both parties verify that the change has actually been written into the registry.

In person or through a representative

You can come to the office together. If the authorized representative acts on behalf of the other party on the basis of a written power of attorney, he needs an officially certified signature of the principal. Vehicle identity inspections: check the rules for motorcycles

From 1 July 2025, its validity is assessed according to the deadlines for regular technical inspections. For a regular motorcycle, this is a six-year period until the first regular inspection, followed by four-year intervals; specific validity depends on category, age and inspection records. A successful technical inspection also includes a vehicle identity inspection. Validity is verified by the register, you do not automatically carry a paper protocol for the application.

Beware of nearly new motorcycles: the first registration of a new motorcycle is not in itself a vehicle identity inspection. The Ministry cites an example where a change of owner requires its implementation the day after registration. Therefore, do not be guided only by the fact that the first MOT will be in a few years. Arrange cover before you ride away

Don't rely on the seller's contract automatically covering you. Verify the follow-on insurance, the exact beginning and fulfillment of the conditions for its creation, including any payment. The seller will notify his insurance company of the change in accordance with the contractual terms. In the Czech Republic, from 1 October 2024, insurance will be checked electronically; however, this does not cancel the obligation to be insured. Three common mistakes to avoid

• The seller hands over the bike and just relies on the promise that the buyer will finish the ownership transfer at some point.
• The buyer confuses the expiry of the MOT validity with the existence of a valid registration check for an almost new machine.
• Both parties deal with insurance only after departure or consider the draft contract as confirmation of coverage.

The registration plate normally stays with the vehicle during a standard domestic change of ownership. Deal with a genuinely lost or damaged plate separately; do not report it as lost or damaged simply because you want a different plate.
