Motorcycle ownership transfer: your paperwork checklist

All advice & guides

Open this page in preparation for handover. A detailed explanation of the rules can be found in of the main ownership transfer guide; here is a handy list so that you don't have to repeat the trip because of a missing document.

Before you meet

  • Compare the VIN on the motorcycle with the registration papers and contract.
  • Clarify who is the owner and who is the operator; the seller must be authorized to handle the motorcycle.
  • Arrange a joint visit to the registry, follow-up electronic filing, or proper representation.
  • Check with the register or in the available vehicle data whether the vehicle identity inspection is valid. For an almost new machine, the first registration does not replace it.
  • The buyer verifies the subsequent insurance and its actual beginning.

What to take to the registration office

For a standard domestic transfer, prepare proof of identity, the vehicle registration certificate, the older large-format technical certificate if one was issued, and an application if you are not using the online procedure. A representative using a paper power of attorney will also need the principal’s officially certified signature. Check requirements for companies, inheritance, imports or special circumstances separately — this checklist covers the sale of a motorcycle already registered in the Czech Republic.

The office verifies the insurance and the validity of the vehicle identity inspection electronically. What matters is the existence of valid records, not a folder of printed receipts. Current registry requirements and official forms.

What to record at handover

  • Handover date and time, VIN, odometer reading and agreed price.
  • Method of payment and its actual confirmation; the picture of the payment order alone is not enough.
  • Number of keys, service documents, panniers, charger and other accessories handed over.
  • Known defects and damage in concrete form, ideally with photographs.
  • Ownership transfer agreement and how both parties confirm its completion.

What to check afterwards

Save the contract, handover record and payment confirmation. The request for a change of owner has a deadline of 10 working days from the transfer of ownership. The seller should verify the actual completion in the Transport Portal and notify the insurance company of the change; buyer will check new details and insurance.

Three separate steps

An ownership transfer is a change in the vehicle register. Handover means physically taking delivery of the motorcycle. The start of insurance cover is a separate matter. Plan all three together, but do not assume that completing one automatically completes the others.

Do you need to insure the motorcycle when you take it over? Send a short inquiry. You do not need to buy the motorcycle from us to prepare an offer.
